Anthropic raises Claude Team seat minimum for tool use

Anthropic raised the minimum seat count for Claude Team plans that turn on tool use, while chat-only Team plans keep the older floor.

Anthropic tightened the seat floor for Claude Team workspaces that unlock tool use. If your team only chats, the older minimum still applies. If you want agents that call tools or drive computer-use style actions, count seats before you flip the switch. That is the whole story, and finance will care about it more than the model card will.

What changed in plain terms

Tool use is the expensive behavior. It burns more capability and creates more support surface than a chat box that returns paragraphs. Anthropic’s response is a higher minimum seat count when those powers are enabled. The company says existing seats keep working; the new floor shows up when you enable the tools or when you renew. That is better than a surprise invoice mid-cycle, but it is still a planning item for anyone mid-pilot.

Chat-only Team plans are explicitly left on the prior floor. Anthropic is drawing a line between “we talk to Claude” and “Claude acts in our systems.” Buyers who blurred those modes for a demo now need a real headcount plan.

How to respond without drama

Check the Team admin for whether tool use is already on. If you are still evaluating, leave tools off until the people and the budget match. If tools are on and you are under the new floor, talk to your Anthropic contact before renewal week. Do not discover the minimum in a failed checkout.

Also separate curiosity from production. A three-person experiment that needs tool use may simply be the wrong plan shape. Anthropic is signaling that agent features are a team sport with a team price. Agree or disagree, but model the seats before the demo becomes a dependency.

Procurement language to update

If your MSA or order form still says “Team plan” without distinguishing chat-only from tool-enabled seats, fix the wording before renewal. Internal chargebacks should mirror the same split so a research team that needs tools does not hide inside a chat-only cost center. When vendors raise floors, the companies that suffer are the ones with fuzzy SKUs in spreadsheets. Anthropic drew a brighter line. Your purchasing sheet should copy it.
